### Living water “Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.’” (John 4:13-14) In his conversation with the Samaritan woman, Jesus uses the water in the well as an image for the eternal life that He offers people. The term “living water” has a double meaning here. In the context of a well, it would normally mean fresh, life-giving water. And this is exactly how the woman understands his words. But Jesus explains to her that his water is very special and that people who drink of it, will never be thirsty again. That sounds fantastic to her — after all, having to draw water from the well every day is exhausting! However, Jesus does not talk about H2O. In the Old Testament, the Lord God is called “the fountain of living water” (Jeremiah 17:13). Jesus applies this to Himself. He is God. He satisfies people’s longing to know God personally. In Psalm 42:1-2, the poet exclaims: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Jesus knows that this Samaritan woman also needs his living water. He says: Here I am. If you knew Who I am, your spiritual thirst would be satisfied once for all. And therefore, He is going to reveal Himself to her. Do you really know God? Has this satisfied your spiritual thirst?
