Uncharted: Ruach, Spirit of God

DAY 42 OF 70

"Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever." - Psalm 44:23 (NIV)

Working with teenagers can be an experience! Especially when it comes to dealing with raw emotions. Young people can be very honest in their opinions and, at times, very upfront with just how they’re feeling. Did you know God can handle your raw emotions?! The book of Psalms is packed full of emotion, extreme highs and lows.

Psalm 44 in particular describes a major defeat in battle against the Israelites. They are suffering, having been humiliated by their enemies, and there is anguish in the author’s tone. Verse 23 claims that God has fallen asleep, completely oblivious to their troubles! Yet the author still cries out to the Lord for help and the Psalm ends with a declaration of God’s steadfast love, despite the hardship.

It’s safe to say, that in the midst of our own distress, God can handle our unfiltered and intense emotions. Don’t hold back from sharing your heart with God, your worries, cares, and laments. He can take it. Remember, His love is steadfast. Declare it today, even if you’re struggling to believe it.

Prayer:

Thank you Father that You invite us to share our hearts with You. Thank you that You made us and You understand how we’re wired. Our emotions and experiences are not a mystery to You. Help us to be honest with You about our experiences and to believe more fully that You are in control. Thank you for being with us always. Amen.
