Lessons From God's Men

DAY 5 OF 7

David Stands Against a Giant

Every dad eventually faces a moment that defines the kind of father he will be.

David walked onto a battlefield where no one else would move. Israel’s warriors stood paralyzed before Goliath.

But it wasn’t just a military crisis; it was a spiritual vacuum. No one was willing to fight for what mattered most.

Sound familiar?

Fathers today face their own giants: passivity, generational wounds, addiction, shame, or fear.

And often, we’d rather avoid the fight than engage in it.

But David didn’t run.

He stepped into the valley, not because he had superior weapons or skills, but because he had clarity about who he was, who his God was, and what was at stake.

That’s what fatherhood demands: moral clarity and righteous courage.

Your kids don’t need a perfect dad, but they desperately need a present one.

A man who fights the battles no one sees—our own pride, the pull of escape, the lies of culture—and chooses to lead with faith, not fear.

David rejected Saul’s armor. He didn’t try to be someone he wasn’t.

Likewise, our families don't need someone else; they need you, fully surrendered to God, slinging stones of truth in a world of giants.

Long before he faced Goliath, David had learned in secret as a shepherd, defending his sheep, standing alone against wild animals to protect the flock.

Your private victories—like saying “no” to temptation, saying “yes” to family dinner, praying over your kids even when you’re tired—those are “facing the lion and bear” moments.

They shape you into the kind of man who stands strong when public battles come.

The older my kids get, the more I see that being a father is less about control and more about courage. It’s not shielding your kids from every single threat; it’s showing them how to face life’s battles with grit, grace, and God at the center.

So, what battle is God calling you to face today, not just for yourself but also for the next generation?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of David, whose courage and trust inspire me today. Help me face my own giants with the same bold faith, knowing that You are my protector and guide. Strengthen my heart to trust in You above all else. Amen.

Reflection: Today, commit to identifying the “giants” you face. Instead of shrinking back, choose to confront them with faith, just as David did. Remind yourself that the Lord is your light and salvation, and with Him, there is nothing to fear! Let David’s courage inspire you to trust God in every challenge.
