Lessons From God's Men

DAY 2 OF 7

Joseph Trains in the Dark

God often forges a man’s character long before He reveals his calling.

And nowhere is that more evident than in the life of Joseph.

Joseph probably felt like he was on the fast track to greatness. He had the multi-colored coat and a God-given vision.

But instead of inheriting his calling when he came to manhood, Joseph’s life took a sudden turn in the opposite direction.

He was betrayed by his own blood, sold into slavery in a foreign land, and received a prison sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.

Years of injustice. Years of silence. Years in the shadows.

But often it seems that’s where God trains men.

Growing up, we’re led to believe that manhood is about dominance or achievement. But Joseph's response is radical: he didn’t rage, retreat, or rot.

He took ownership of what little he had. He faithfully served Potiphar’s house, even as a slave. He served in prison, even when no one saw him. He refined his mind, guarded his heart, and trusted God, even when the dream felt dead.

Here’s what’s easy to miss: Joseph was being forged.

Not punished, but prepared.

Not delayed, but developed.

That’s how God works with men. He buries them before He builds them.

Because responsibility requires integrity that can hold up under pressure.

And years later, when Joseph finally stood in Pharaoh’s court, shouldering great leadership, holding power, and facing the very men who destroyed his youth, he didn’t seek revenge.

He chose a greater vision.

“What you meant for evil, God meant for good.”

That’s not weakness—that’s a restrained strength, and it’s only developed by men who’ve been through the fire and come out refined.

So, brother, if you’re in the pit right now, if you feel your current position is unjust, or if you just feel stuck, don’t assume God is absent in the dark.

He is actually building a man who can be trusted with more than you’ve imagined.

Stay faithful. Stay sharp. Stay submitted.

Because when the time comes, God never needs to scramble.

He sends the men He’s already trained in the dark.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, when life feels unfair or uncertain, help me to trust like Joseph. Teach me to be faithful in every season, whether in a palace or a prison. Shape my heart to forgive, and open my eyes to see Your purpose in my pain. Amen.

Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you’re waiting and perhaps feeling weary or bitter? Ask God to give you Joseph’s perspective: what others meant for harm, God can use for good. Stay the course, brother!
