Dare to Dream

DAY 2 OF 12

God speaks through dreams

“And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” (Acts 2:17 ESV)

The Lord God communicated with people in many different ways. With some, like the prophet Moses, He spoke directly and clearly. For the people of Israel, He wrote a summary of His commandments on stone tablets. Sometimes He sent an angel to convey a message. And in Numbers 12:6 ESV, we read: “If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.”

So, God showed something of the future or of the reality behind our visual world by means of dreams and visions. This way of communication is not limited to the period when prophets of the Lord spoke to the Israelites. On the contrary, God promises that “in the last days” not only a few prophets, but many believers will see visions and dreams. Young and old will receive revelations through God’s Spirit. In this way He speaks to individual believers and churches, overcoming their differences.

God speaks in other ways as well, for example through the Bible and through the example that Jesus left us. Can you name more ways? Do they all seem equally real and authoritative to you, or do you experience a distinction between them?
