John 19:28 says that in Jesus’ final moments, He said, “I am thirsty.” While drawing His last breaths, Jesus was intentional with what He said. In fact, the Bible shows us that everything Jesus did and said throughout His life was intentional. Knowing that, what else could He have meant when He said He was thirsty? He was fulfilling the prophecy from the Old Testament to let everyone know that He truly was the Son of God—the only one who can satisfy our longings. Matthew 5:6 tells us the Kingdom of Heaven is about craving a relationship with God. Without Christ, you’re hungry and thirsty. But after you meet Him and accept Him as your Savior, He quenches your inner hunger and thirst. Jesus thirsts, to connect with us—to share in our human sufferings and longings for our Creator. When Jesus said He was thirsty, it was more about reminding us what He could give us, than what He actually needed. As you pray today, think about what you’re thirsting for. Are you thirsting after the things of God or something else? Ask God to quench your thirst today.
