Watch and Pray

Mark 13:35, 36
“…keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back…If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping…”

Mark 14:38
“Watch and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Followers of Jesus are to live in a constant state of readiness for Christ’s return. The behavior which anticipates Christ’s return is to “watch and pray.” When we watch and pray we have spiritual strength to resist temptation and the pull of spiritual slumber. When followers of Jesus fall asleep in their faith walk, they no longer live in expectation of Christ’s return and the rewards and judgments that will follow. To be spiritually asleep is to focus on the here and now with little thought of eternity or the will of God.

Jesus, fill me with your Spirit and help me watch and pray so I can be ready to meet you at any time.
