Brokenness or Crushed?
Luke 20:17, 18
“…‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone…Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.’”
Jesus is the stone the builders rejected. The Jewish leaders expected a Messiah that looked like them and valued what they valued, (honor, tradition, the separateness of Israel). Jesus was from Nazareth in Galilee, from a humble family and economic class. His vision of the kingdom of God included good news for the Sidonians and Syrians (Luke 4:26, 27), and rejected the prideful tradition of the Jewish teachers of the law. For that he was rejected. To those who choose to follow him, Jesus promises brokenness like the bread broken which fed many; so we must be broken, our pride humbled and our full dependency placed on God. For those who reject brokenness and the cross, there is only the crushing reality that they have missed the source of life, Jesus, the Son of God.
Lord Jesus, I humble myself before you. I choose brokenness and the life of the Spirit for your glory.
