“Health is Wealth”
Do you remember this definition of health we all learned in grade school: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." It's from the World Health Organization (WHO), published in 1948. It was interesting to come across it recently in my readings.
Forbes magazine carried an article that showed health had really become big business in America– health care spending ballooned from $25 billion in 1960 to an incredible $2.5 trillion in 2010! I think we can agree that across the globe, there has been a dramatic increase in overall awareness and concern over personal health. Every restaurant has a healthy menu, there's a gym at almost every corner. And it's cool to talk about the merits of a balanced diet and exercise.
But we should take all this further. The WHO definition invites us to aim for emotional and social well-being, too. And remember there's a solid biblical principle behind it: "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength."
