More Than Words - the Transforming Power of Prayer

DAY 6 OF 14

To Be a Sheep

Most of us desire to be strong, independent, and brave. It sounds like the description of a lion, doesn’t it? However, in the Bible, God often compares us to sheep. Why would anyone want to be compared to a sheep?

Sheep are not independent; instead, they are entirely dependent on their shepherd. Their shepherd feeds and protects them. God does the same for us. Sheep know their shepherd’s voice and follow him. They like to stay close to him. We need to follow God’s voice and His leading. Like sheep, we feel safe in the presence of our Good Shepherd.

Although it is easy to follow other people, we need to stay close enough to the Lord that we know His voice and follow His leading. Are you close enough to the Lord that you know His voice and can distinguish it from the thousands of other voices that you hear every day? I saw a video once of a Shepherd calling his sheep. The entire flock responded immediately and ran very quickly toward their shepherd when they heard his voice. Other sheepherders tried calling the man’s flock using the same words. They even tried to mimic his voice. The sheep weren’t fooled. They knew their shepherd’s voice so well that they never followed a pretender.

The passage in John 10:27 (NIV) tells us that God’s sheep listen to His voice and they follow Him. Proverbs 3:5 (NIV) tells us that when we trust in Him with all our heart, and acknowledge Him in all our ways, He makes our paths straight. He wants to give us wisdom in all of our decisions. The key is listening and following. He will never lead you where His grace cannot keep you.

Ask Yourself:

Am I spending enough time reading God’s Word, praying, and listening? Am I seeking God’s direction in every area of my life?

About this Plan

More Than Words - the Transforming Power of Prayer

Prayer is more than asking—it’s how we draw near to God, hear His voice, and walk in His peace. Over 14 days, you’ll learn to pray continually, approach God boldly, build a daily rhythm of solitude, use the ACTS framework, praise through pain, “pray your day,” seek wise agreement with others, and trust Jesus with every decision. Come closer as a friend of God—and be changed from the inside out.
