Giving Thanks Using the Psalms

Give thanks! In silence

‘There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, o God, and to You the vow will be performed’ (Psalm 65:1 NAS).

At the time Psalm 65 was written, the temple still stood in Jerusalem. This was the place where believers from all Israel gathered together. In the translation of the New American Standard Bible it seems a bit contradictory that there is praise and silence at the same time. The temple had a separate room, the Holy Place, into which only priests were allowed to enter. While the priest was there to pray to God and perform his duties on behalf of the believers, the people stood in the temple square waiting for the priest to return to give them the blessing (Luke 1:10). This reminds us of Psalm 65. Here we read what created this quiet awe: God’s forgiveness, His power, His blessing. Perhaps you recognise this: you are so impressed by something that you are silenced and can only sigh. Say out loud or write down what God has done in your life by using Psalm 65:10-14. How did you see His power? You will need to meditate in silence first and see what God is doing. Let the quietness help you discover how good and great God is.
