Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 5 OF 12

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, ESV)

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8, ESV)

Remember the Sabbath Am I taking time to stop my busyness and rest, trusting God will provide?

The Sabbath wasn’t a new commandment for the people of Israel, it was an old commandment, established at creation. The emphasis isn’t as much on rest as it is on stopping being busy, ceasing your incessant activity. There wasn’t a cultural parallel to this commandment when it was written. No other culture had a similar rhythm of ceasing activity and resting. For the people of Israel to do this was truly countercultural. To do this would set them apart from every other person. And that is the meaning of holy - to be set apart.

To honor the Sabbath in your life is to cease your doing so you can reflect on, and focus on, your being. We are human beings, not human doings. To participate in Sabbath rest is an act of faith that says you can do less in seven days on your own power than God can do through you in six days when you are obedient.

I heard a wise person once say, “We rest for the battle, not from the battle.” We don’t know the battles ahead, but God does. And he has already designed the way for us to be ready.

Questions to Consider

- What would your family say about your ability to rest and trust God?

- Are you mostly a “rest from the battle” or “rest for the battle” kind of person?

Actions to Take

- Intentionally schedule times of rest.

- Use part of your time of rest to lean into Jesus and his Word more.

Prayer to Make

Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that too often I depend upon my strength more than your strength. Forgive me and give me the faith to trust in your provision for all of my needs. Thank you for giving me rest for the battles that are coming my way. Amen.

About this Plan

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
