Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 4 OF 12

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, ESV)

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7, ESV)

Not misuse the Lord’s nameAm I showing reverence to God in how I speak?

The Lord’s name is not just a word, it represents the fullness of who he is. God’s name is his reputation and his character. To use his name in vain is to take up his name in falsehood or uselessness. Don’t take lightly referring to the God of the universe because when you use his name, you are invoking his character!

Additionally, this commandment warns against using God’s name as a magical word for cursing or hexing others, something that would have been common in the time when this was written. God’s name has power, but praying in God’s name isn’t a secret magical formula for getting what you want.

The proper attitude is to have respect for God and that means every time you use the name of God, you are doing it in a way that honors who he is and his character.

Questions to Consider

- When you use God’s name, is he honored and glorified?

- Are you trying to manipulate God or situations by using God’s name to get what you want above what God wants?

Actions to Take

- Don’t swear.

- Intentionally use God’s name to bring him glory.

Prayer to Make

Heavenly Father, thank you for the power of your name. Thank you for the beauty of your name. Help me use your name as a blessing over others and let it bring you glory. Amen.

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
