Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 12 OF 12

Taking the time to take an honest look at our life is a life-giving spiritual practice. We do it with a heart of humility and grace, knowing we can all wander off the path, deceive ourselves and be deceived by the world.

God’s Word is the plumb line that never changes and helps us to know what is true and right. Using the Ten Commandments as an instrument of grace helps us remember that, just like the people of Israel, God has delivered us from our slavery and set us on a path of freedom. Following his commandments faithfully keeps us on that path.

Perhaps you can take a screenshot of the Ten Commandments with the reflection questions and use it as a regular check-up to keep you on the path of grace and life Jesus longs for you to live.

No other Gods – What am I worshipping?

No idols Am I seeking hope, peace and satisfaction from something other than God?

Not misuse the Lord’s nameAm I showing reverence to God in how I speak?

Remember the Sabbath Am I taking time to rest, trusting God will provide?

Honor my Father and Mother Am I showing respect to my parents and those in authority who are teaching me about faith in God?

Not murder Is my heart full of bitterness or anger toward another?

Not commit adultery Are my eyes pure and am I not treating others as objects to fulfill my desires?

Not steal Am I justifying my actions by telling myself “I deserve it”?

Not give false testimonyAm I speaking truth about others and to others?

Not covet– Am I longing for things or a person I don’t have or can’t have?

Questions to Consider

- Which of the commandments is the Spirit inviting you to more deeply address?

- Who can you ask to talk about these things with so you are pursuing God in community?

Actions to Take

- Over the next four weeks look at the list at least once a week and reflect on what God is showing you.

- Choose two passages that are resonating with your spirit. Read them daily for five days and take five minutes a day to think on the message of the passages.

Prayer to Make

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” (Psalm 51:10–12, NLT)

About this Plan

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
