Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 7 OF 12

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, ESV)

"You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20:13, ESV)

Not murder (see the words of Jesus in Matthew 5.21-22) Is my heart full of bitterness or anger toward another?

The original meaning here is a warning against taking innocent life. There is a tie to people being made in the image of God. If we take a life through killing them, we are destroying someone made in the image of God.

Jesus takes it to a whole new level with his prohibition of anger, insults and swearing at another! All of this has the same effect of making small of killing someone who is created in his image. All of these things are symptoms of a root of anger and bitterness that has poisoned your soul.

So you may not have physically taken another life, but have you torn another person down through your attitude, words and actions? If so, it reveals a heart in need of renewal by the Spirit of God.

Questions to Consider

- Has someone hurt you, betrayed you, disrespected you or dishonored you and you have reacted with the same things to them?

- How is your heart? Are you carrying bitterness and anger toward someone or a situation?

Actions to Take

- Confess your hurt, anger and bitterness to God, asking Jesus to come into the middle of it and bring healing.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if you need to go and ask someone to forgive you for what you have done to them. Obey the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer to Make

Lord Jesus Christ, reveal to me any anger and bitterness that I have been holding onto towards anyone that is poisoning my soul. Help me see with your eyes, forgive them and seek forgiveness. Thank you for your forgiveness towards me so I can live free. Amen.

About this Plan

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
