Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 21 OF 181

The Guaranteed Harvest Read Mark 4:21-34 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14 Jesus continued to teach the disciples concerning the kingdom of God by using the imagery of the lamp on the lamp stand (vs 21-25) and two parables focussing on the growth of the kingdom of God (vs 26-32). The first parable, the parable of the growing seed, reminds us of the quiet and continuous growth of the kingdom of God. That the seed will bear fruit at its own appointed time and will be harvested is a promise. The second parable, the parable of the mustard seed, also carries similar theme. The mustard seed is one of the tiniest seed, but it grows to become one of the largest plants. Both these parables describe silent and almost unnoticed growth with amazing final results. So it is with the kingdom of God. From an insignificant beginning it will triumph. This is indeed a very comforting, encouraging word from God to many of us who are the persecuted minority in Asia. Similarly, the earthly ministry of Jesus also met with opposition and seemed to be insignificant, but it grew into a mighty world-wide church, and it is still growing every day. In whatever capacity you are serving God - a Sunday school teacher, a cell group leader, a worship leader - know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain, even though you may not see the immediate desired results. We may not even see the harvest in our lifetime. Our task is not the results but faithfulness in carrying out what God requires of us. Have you become discouraged in serving God? Do not let discouragement and despair be the final word in your service to God. How have these two parables encouraged you?
