Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 26 OF 181

The Royal Bridegroom Read Psalm 45:1-17 You are the most excellent of men. Psalm 45:2 This is a Messianic psalm. As the royal son of David, the king foreshadows Christ, the promised Son of David whose kingdom will know no end. Consider the following: (vs 1-9) You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace (v 2) See John 1:14: ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ ‘… let the nations fall beneath your feet’ (v 5b) See Philippians 2:9-11: ‘that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father’. ‘Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom’ (v 6) See Isaiah 9:6-7: ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever’. The second part of the psalm (vs 10-17) exhorts the royal bride to: ‘forget your people and your father’s house’ (v 10) The wedding signals the end of an old way of life and the beginning of a new. How much has this been true of the church, the bride of Christ? ‘honour him (the bridegroom) for he is your lord (11) ‘He is not Lord at all if He is not Lord of all’. We honour Christ when we submit to Him and make His Name glorious in our families, our community and our nation. The all glorious bride is led to the king (v 14). See 2 Corinthians 11:2. The apostle looks ahead to the wedding of the Lamb and His bride that has made herself ready (Revelation 19:7). We are the bride! What stage of preparedness are we at?
