But I Did Not Understand
I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?"He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. (Daniel 12:8-9)
Second Timothy tells us that all of scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. We pray that reading Daniel has been a walk though once-heard Bible stories with flesh and fresh understanding laid on. But we know a lot of it has been hard to chew and difficult to understand. Our intention has been not to to interpret difficult prophecies or explain things that are seemingly inexplicable, but to really focus on the characters and give you some honest commentary on what we see happening in this story and how it moves our hearts.
The phrase “heroes of the Bible" gets tossed around often in Christian culture and most agree that Daniel should be thrown in that category. A hero is defined as one of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities, or the principal character in a story. The thing we want to catch here, the thing it seemed that Daniel so much wanted the people around him to catch, is that the Lord is the hero of his story, our story, and the greater story of mankind.
The entire plot of Daniel revolves around the idea that the greatest and most blessed men (or women) receive all that they have from the heavenly Father, and in turn, should give Him utmost praise and attention back. It is good and right for us to seek to understand God's Word - to read it for wisdom and a greater understanding of Him. Yet, there are some times when it seems He might leave us with questions and a lack of complete comprehension to increase our view and understanding of just how great He is. He is truthful, but He is not simple. He is real, but He is incomprehensible. He is good, but He is not tame.
When we ask of Him, “what shall be the outcome?" and hear only quiet whispers of His glory, let's not be dismayed. When we see or live things that don't quite make sense, let's not turn to the human characters around us for answers. Let's don't be like the kings and wise men of old who stubbornly set their intentions on having all the answers and getting all the glory. Women, as we read His truth, let's remember who the only Hero is. Our King, our Father, our Lord.

About this Plan

Maybe we’ve heard about Daniel and the lion’s den - but who was he really? Daniel was an exile from Judah in a foreign land (Babylon) with many eyes on him, watching which moves He would make and how those choices would define him. Let’s dig into Daniel together and let the Lord make Himself more known to us. Let’s read about the One who made Daniel’s story matter and who is still speaking truth to us through His words today.
