Thriving at Work

DAY 5 OF 6

Prioritizing your mental health as you work

According to multiple studies by various reputable firms around the world, there is a statistic that shows a staggering number of people battling with mental health issues, with the cause coming from their workplaces. Sometimes, it’s an unhealthy relationship with a colleague, job insecurity, stress, work overload, pressure —you name it. After going through some of these issues years ago, I came to the conclusion that it is vital for everyone, not just myself, to prioritise mental health, even as we work. You cannot deliver your best at your workplace if you are battling with mental traumas. You may force yourself to work well on day one of the incident, but if it is not addressed over time, it can significantly affect you.

Elijah in the Bible faced this issue. He became so depressed when Jezebel was threatening him that he wanted to give up. God had to send ravens to bring him food, as the prophet also ate and rested (see 1 Kings 17:4-6). Sometimes you may feel overworked at your workplace, especially when the workload peaks. In those times, it is not easy. But I would counsel you to break the tasks down and take them one by one. Do your best and leave the rest to the next day. If you have to do overtime, you can. But after that period, consider giving yourself a warm rest, especially on the weekend. If you get some days off, take advantage of them. You can be replaced if something happens to you, so be healthy. May the Lord help you.
