Faithful to Protect from Harm
Nearly two decades ago, my husband and I purchased tickets to attend a local jazz concert during the holidays. We were relatively new parents and were anxiously anticipating the thrill of a night on the town with no little one or diaper bag in tow. Grandparents graciously drove to town to stay with our daughter and, despite the forecast of snow, we headed out of the house, ready to risk life and limb for a few hours of adults-only freedom.
The concert that featured holiday jazz classics was spectacular, but the volume of snow that had collected while we sat in the cozy concert hall was slightly alarming as we stepped outside to head home. We were driving a front-wheel drive sedan and, while it drove well in stormy conditions, the white stuff was piling up quickly and we had a 20-minute drive across town. Regardless of the challenges, we had to get home to our baby girl and her caregivers, so we set out, slowly and cautiously.
We had only been on the road for a few minutes when the bottom dropped out of the sky and what had been a steady downfall of snow became more like a blizzard. Visibility was waning in the dark of that winter night and, before we knew it, we couldn't assess with confidence which side of the road we were driving on, and eventually could not tell which direction we needed to turn at the next intersection of a town we were otherwise familiar with. Panic was beginning to set in and we began to pray.
"Lord, show us how to get home. Carve out our path so that we can get there safely."
About that time a sizable snow plow pulled out in front of our vehicle and was getting on the highway we had planned to take. My husband instinctively followed the lead of the snow plow and, with blind trust due to the snowy blast, remained in its cleared tracks, hoping it would drive in the general direction of our home. Minutes passed like hours with so little visibility that we questioned if we should just pull over and wait it out. But then all of a sudden, we recognized the green interstate signage overhead, indicating we were at the exit that led to our neighborhood! The snow plow kept going, and when I looked back, I couldn't even see that a snow plow had even been there. It was as though it had evaporated from existence. Instantly my husband and I both looked at each other and said, "Thank You, Lord". We were, without any doubt, assured: we had just experienced the guidance of an angel, the protection and safe return home, compliments of God's faithfulness to protect from harm.
There is simply no safer place to be than in the protection of a faithful God.
Dig a Little Deeper
Purpose to not only trust God with the bigger, slightly more terrifying experiences in your life, but instead to pray each day for His protection from harm. His Spirit will guide your steps as you trust Him to protect, perhaps prompting you to take a different route than planned, or prevent a trip you had intended to take. He may caution you about a typically harmless situation that you should keep your children from, for reasons you may not know. God is faithful to protect as we are faithful to trust.
