Hebrews

DAY 20 OF 22

The first readers of the letter to the Hebrews lived in a time of great unrest. The Jewish revolt against the Romans, which began in 66 AD, escalated increasingly. Jewish factions also fought among themselves, and in Galilee, Christians had to flee to the eastern Jordan. Only after the Roman conquest could they return, but the situation remained tense. At the same time, they faced persecution from fellow Jews. Outwardly, things did not look good for the Christians.

It’s understandable that questions arose: “Why does God allow this? If He is on our side, why do we experience such suffering?” The writer of Hebrews gives an answer that is at first hard to digest. He explains that while their situation is challenging, it is not extraordinary. Jesus Himself suffered even more, as did the witnesses of faith in Hebrews 11. Times of suffering are part of the life of faith. God uses them to strengthen us in the fight against sin and to deepen our trust in Him.

Interestingly, the church often grows strongest where it is persecuted—whether in China, North Korea, or the Islamic world. These Christians experience a depth in their relationship with God that would hardly be possible without persecution. Through suffering, God accomplishes good. It’s like a visit to the dentist: the injections and drilling are painful, but the consequences of neglect would be far worse.

Even Jesus learned obedience through what He suffered (cf. Hebrews 5:7–11). God’s goal is our good. He loves us—and that is why He disciplines us. This discipline can look different in each life, but the battle against sin is something each of us must fight.

Something to think about

  • What challenges are you facing right now in your life?
  • What steps could you take to deepen your trust in God during this time?
  • Where can you support your brother or sister in Christ?
