I'd Rather Die on the High Ground

DAY 1 OF 5

Standing Strong

The Hausa School of Missions trains missionaries engaged in cross-cultural ministries among Hausa-speaking communities in Northern Nigeria. In March 2020, the Kamuku team had just arrived for a two-month refresher course when news came of an abduction. Armed men had invaded, shot one staff member in the leg, and abducted eight teachers and one pupil from a boarding primary school in Maruba. They were held captive for 52 days before their release. That was the beginning of a series of deadly terrorist attacks in Kamuku land that continue to this day.

The bandits came first for livestock, then began to raid villages injuring, killing, and kidnapping people. Houses were burned and food supplies and animals were carried away, greatly affecting people’s means of livelihood. Eventually, most of the villagers were scattered to different places and struggling to survive.

Church planting has also been affected as people lack food and money to meet basic needs. The churches face harsh times with many of the believers displaced and those left behind living in fear and uncertainty. Large numbers of people have been kidnapped and held for ransom. Several missionaries have been gruesomely murdered.

But amid these great losses, the believers have not lost their faith in Christ. Those who end up in the same location meet to worship and pray. Their strong faith has continued to grow, and their testimonies are inspiring. One of the Kamuku converts said, “Let the persecutors come and do their worst. After all, it is better to die on a higher ground than to die in the valley.” This devotional includes a few of their stories as they continue to take up their cross and follow Christ.

Reflection

Prayerfully think over the circumstances of your life. Is there an area where you might experience loss, challenges, or suffering if you faithfully follow Christ? Is there an area where God is calling you to “take up your cross”? If so, what is one step of obedience you will take this week to live on the “high ground”?
