There was a distinct Western cultural moment in 2012, where there was a belief that the world would end on 12 December 2012, based on the end date of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. A movie called ‘2012’ was created based on this date, that ultimately came and went without apocalyptic events. However, it demonstrated an intrigue for humans to understand our finiteness in this world. If we knew how many days we had remaining on this earth, how would that change how we live?

The religious leaders of Jesus’ time would often query and wonder when the end of the world would happen. But, Jesus tells us that we don't have to worry when that day will be— whether that’s today or tomorrow— because no one will know. He does, however, caution us to be ready when Christ returns at an hour that no one will expect.

We can often feel like our days are ‘business as usual’. Those days merge into weeks, months, years, and before we know it, we become spiritually muted and lifeless. But being ready for Christ’s return means being attentive, bearing fruit by the Spirit, and ultimately living in faith.

We are warned then not to be caught lacking when Jesus returns. Have you grasped God’s holiness, the extent of your sin, and depths of grace that Jesus offers?

Today, ponder this: Are you living as though you are spiritually asleep? Would you be ready if Jesus returned today? Pray and ask for help to endure this life with a ready faith and with spiritual vitality.
