When Hope Hurts: Miscarriage and FaithSample

I Do Not Want a Child More Than I Desire God
The journey after miscarriage(s) looks different for everyone.
You may be the person who is desperate to be pregnant again, and that is okay.
You may be the person who wants a break from being pregnant anytime soon, and that is okay, too.
Regardless of your desire to have children or not after a miscarriage, we should all strive to have the bold confession:
“God, I do not want a child more than I want You.”
If you struggle with saying or meaning this, it may be that you’ve made having a child an idol. The desire to have children is not a ‘bad’ thing. In fact, scripture tells us that children are a heritage from the Lord, like arrows in the hands of a warrior.
Scripture provides countless examples of couples who longed for children but experienced roadblocks and brokenness in the process.
Those delays sometimes led to actions outside God’s design (Sarah, Abraham, and Hagar). In others, that same longing pushed them closer to the Giver of Children (Hannah), and led to sacrificial devotion as Hannah gave the child she had longed for back to God.
Ultimately, we should not run away from God because of the pain of loss.
We should run to Him.
Take your disappointment to Him.
The Source of all comfort will indeed comfort you.
The One who forgives will forgive you for making a good thing an idol.
The One who holds time in His hands will strengthen you to lean into His perfect will and way, for His ways are higher than ours.
About this Plan

Miscarriage is a wound that is often carried in silence, but with a heart full of questions. In this devotional, I share a journey of two miscarriages and the lament, doubt, faith and the hope that followed. Whether you’ve experienced a miscarriage or are walking alongside someone who has, I pray that through honest lament and hope restored, you will encounter the God who sees, heals and rebuilds from the ruins.
