I am… the bread of life

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life’” (John 6:35 ESV)

The Gospel of John wants to help us get to know Jesus (better). John quoted several statements by Jesus that begin with “I am.” Today, that statement is: I am the bread that gives life. Centuries before Jesus was born, the people of Israel migrated from Egypt through the desert to the land of Canaan. To provide for their daily needs, God let a kind of flour fall from heaven every day, which they could use to bake bread (Exodus 16:13-16 and 31). Bread from heaven. Likewise, Jesus says, "I am the living Bread that came down from heaven to satisfy people's spiritual hunger." (John 6:51 ESV) Spiritual hunger is a longing for God and a desire to know Him.

Bread keeps us alive and gives us energy to do our tasks. Jesus reconnects us with God. Through this connection, we receive real and eternal life. By listening to Jesus' words and applying them in our lives, we develop spiritual strength to live as His followers. Jesus is the Bread that never runs out and gives eternal life. Bread that we need every day and that is available every day.
