Coming to Life: 30-Day DevotionalSample

In the Beginning
The story begins with God. Before there was light, sky, land, or sea, there was Him. Genesis 1 opens with the words, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This is not simply the introduction to Israel’s story; it is the foundation of every story. Creation declares that God is the source of life, order, and beauty.
When God made humanity, He set us apart by breathing His image into us. To be made in His image means that every person has worth, dignity, and purpose. It also means that we were created for a relationship with Him and with one another.
Even from the first chapter, we see that Jesus, the Word made flesh, was not absent. John 1 reminds us that the Word was with God in the beginning, and through Him all things were made. Paul echoes this in Colossians: everything was created by Christ, through Christ, and for Christ. The thread of Jesus runs from creation to new creation.
Yet, the story of Genesis also points forward. The God who made all things good is the same God who promises to make all things new. In Revelation, we are assured that the brokenness of this world will not have the final word. The Creator will also be the Re-Creator, restoring what sin has marred.
From the very first day, we are invited to see Jesus not only as Savior but also as Creator and Sustainer. Our lives are not accidents. They are crafted by His hands, upheld by His power, and purposed for His glory. To begin with, Genesis is to begin with hope — that the One who spoke light into the darkness can bring light into our lives today.
Reflection Questions
- What does it mean to you personally that you were made in the image of God?
- How does seeing Jesus as Creator change the way you view your life and the world around you?
Prayer
Creator God, thank You for making the heavens, the earth, and me. Thank You that I am made in Your image and created for relationship with You. Jesus, thank You that all things were made through You and for You. Help me live each day with the confidence that my life has purpose in You. Make me a reflection of Your light and truth in this world. Amen.
