One Week in Prayer 10-Day Devotional on Building a Consistent Habit of Daily Prayer

DAY 1 OF 10

Introduction – Beginning the Journey of Prayer

Devotional:
Have you ever asked yourself: How do I pray? What do I pray for? How long should I pray? Who should I pray for — and why should I even pray? These questions are far more common than you might think.

My own journey with prayer began long before I truly understood it. As a child growing up in a Muslim home, I would often watch my mother pray for hours on her mat, her rosary beads moving steadily through her fingers. I remember lying awake at night, wondering: Why does she pray so much? Who is she talking to? And perhaps most intriguingly: Why don’t men pray like that?

Years later, after coming to know Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, I realized that my prayer life was still largely unstructured. I prayed as the need arose, switching between praying in the Spirit and addressing whatever came to mind at the moment. While it wasn’t without value, I found it lacked consistency and intentionality.

That began to change in 2016 when the Lord placed it on my heart to create a definite prayer plan. I organized my prayer themes by days of the week and began to pray according to that plan. It was one of the most rewarding spiritual decisions I had ever made. Suddenly, prayer became more purposeful, engaging, and refreshing.

There’s a famous quote that says, “Anything becomes simpler when it has a plan.” That’s true for prayer, too. This devotional is designed to help you build an intentional prayer life — one that is consistent, Spirit-led, and deeply rooted in your relationship with God.

Whether you are a man or woman, single or married, young or old, my hope is that these next few days will ignite a fresh fire in your prayer life. If you’ve struggled with prayer before, I pray you’ll discover that the “secret” to an effective prayer life is simply this:

Whatever you do, just pray!

Application:
Today, take stock of your current prayer life. Is it intentional, or is it driven by your mood and circumstances? Write down one or two changes you can make to become more consistent. Consider setting a specific time each day to pray during this 10-day journey.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for inviting me into a relationship with You through prayer. Teach me to pray with focus and faith. Help me to be consistent, intentional, and Spirit-led in my prayers. As I begin this journey, renew my desire to spend time with You daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
