Romans 9
Sovereignty
Paul highlights the story of Jacob and Esau to show that God’s purposes are not driven by human effort, heritage, or merit. Before they had done anything—good or bad—God chose Jacob. This is a confronting truth because it removes all grounds for pride. We don’t earn God’s love. We don’t position ourselves high enough to be chosen. His call rests solely on His mercy and purpose.
This doesn’t make God unjust—it magnifies His sovereignty. It reminds us that salvation is God’s initiative from beginning to end. Our lives are evidence that we are here not because of chance, but because of His gracious call.
