The Path: What if the Way of Jesus Is Different Than You Thought?

DAY 4 OF 8

The Cave

What if all God wanted from you was to trust him?

Tal discovered what every follower of Jesus must learn: there's a vast difference between trying harder and trusting deeper. The Rockface promised progress through effort—just climb higher, push harder, prove your dedication. The Field offered comfortable passivity—just enjoy what you have and don't rock the boat. But the Cave? The Cave demanded something else entirely: trust in the darkness.

Which are you more drawn to? Those of us that are drawn to the Rockface of Striving want to prove that we're serious and dedicated . . . but we also think we're in control of our own growth. We'll couch it in a lot of good religious terms, but ultimately we believe our growth is on us and our efforts.

Those of us that lean toward the Field of Passivity want to enjoy all God has done for us, and certainly all the comforting aspects of following Jesus . . . but we also want to keep certain areas of our lives to ourselves and away from God, like maybe our dating life or our finances. We talk about how much we love God, but we aren't willing to risk discomfort to follow him deeper.

The Cave of Trust is actually the most challenging path. Trust is dynamic, scary, and fully reliant on Jesus instead of our own striving. This is the mysterious way of the Kingdom: we grow not by striving but by surrendering, not by climbing but by following, not by lighting our own way but by trusting the Light that lives within us. The Crest doesn't glow brightest when life is easy—it shines when we step into the unknown, trusting God's voice in the darkness.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are you more tempted by the Rockface of Striving or the Field of Passivity?
  2. When has God asked you to trust him in a situation where you couldn't see the outcome?
  3. How might the "darkness" in your life actually be an invitation to experience God's light?
