DAY 28 OF 36

Bible Study 22/30

Jesus commanded: Take up your cross and follow Me

No.4/12

Key principle

The Bible explicitly says that everyone following Jesus will be persecuted. Therefore, in the face of persecution, don't immediately assume that you must have done something wrong.

Key Scripture passages to study

Luke 9:57-62 and Luke 14:25-28

2 Timothy 3:12 (BSB) -Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

3 Questions

1. What do we learn about God in these 3 passages of Scripture? (How does God reveal Himself to us in these passages? What do we learn about His character, work, commands, and promises?)

2. What do we learn about ourselves or people in these passages? (What does God expect of me? What needs to change in my life? What responsibilities does God give me?)

3. Why is Jesus so radical when He tells us to follow Him? He says: Take up your cross… count the cost… don’t look back… (etc.).

Obedience

Because God speaks to us from His Word, how should we respond? How am I to obey God? What needs to change in my life? How should I apply these Scriptures in my life? How can I be a blessing to others? Respond with a clear, practical and specific activity about what they will do over the next 7 days. At your next gathering, share with each other (if you are part of a group) what happened when you carried out these commands that the Holy Spirit gave you.

Reaction to persecution

  • Never retaliate, even when faced with unjust behaviour and false accusations.
  • Read Romans 5:5 and ask God the Holy Spirit to pour out the love of God into your heart so that you can love unconditionally.
  • Never defend yourself. Yes, explain what you believe and why you believe it. Acknowledge it when you do not know the answer to a question. You do not have to defend God. Say that you will find out and come back to them.
  • It is always good to ask people who ask difficult questions why they are asking the question. Just ask them: Why is the question important to you? What do you think would be the answer to that question? Do you want an answer, or are you just asking the question? Understanding the person (and possibly the pain accompanying the problem) is better than giving a good answer.

About this Plan

For New Followers of Jesus - 30 Bible Studies

Every day, people come to Jesus and start to follow Him. Many of them do not receive follow-up. Nobody is taking care of them. Nobody helps them grow in their relationship with Jesus or explains to them what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Short: Nobody is discipling them. This plan will help you to that with young converts.
