DAY 165 OF 365

El-elyon Abram commands our admiration and fascination. Think about it. Here was a man well into his later years, who picked up and went to sojourn in a strange land because God spoke to him one day. He came from a pagan culture littered with false idols and deities. He had options left and right, options that were much more convenient. He had no church, no Bible, no accountability partners, nor any inspirational authors or pastors to turn to for affirmation. He didn't have any of that, and yet he stuck to the straight and narrow path God had called him to. How? Here's what Abram did have, he had an accurate understanding of who this God was that had called him out. We get a glimpse of his understanding here as he refers to God as El-elyon, or "God Most High." This word elyon is among the most descriptive in the Hebrew scriptures. It's related to a group of Hebrew words that mean "ascent, step, stairway, upper, roof, high, above, and upward." Envision yourself traveling to the top floor of a skyscraper in a glass-enclosed elevator. Imagine the sensation of seeing yourself rise higher and higher above the horizon. No longer bound to the ground, you're now over and above all that once surrounded you. That's the idea behind this word elyon. Abram understood that this God who had spoken to him was over and above his surroundings. Without knowing where his obedience would take him, Abram trusted that the One he was obeying did. El-elyon's position was so much higher that His perspective was superior and to be trusted. When we question or doubt what God has called us to, it's the name El-elyon that reminds us that His position and perspective is greater than ours, so it's best to stick to His prescribed path. It's the name El-elyon that reminds us that God's position and perspective is greater than ours, Father does know best! Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
