DAY 170 OF 365

Jehovah-jireh In a previous study, we saw that many of God's names were a combination of the word El, which is the general name for God, and another Hebrew word that drew attention to a specific aspect of His nature. The same thing also occurs with the word Jehovah, the personal name of God. For the balance of this month, we're going to encounter a series of Jehovah names, and each one takes us ever closer to the core of whom God is. The first one we come across is here in Genesis 22:14. Understanding the context is absolutely critical here. It's the story of Abraham offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice. As Abraham's arm was poised to slay his son, God intervened and commanded him to spare Isaac. At that moment, Abraham saw a ram stuck in a bush nearby, which he took and sacrificed in his son's place. It's then and there that Abraham named the place after God. In English, it reads, "The-LORD-Will-Provide," but in Hebrew, it's the name Jehovah-jireh. We understand the name Jehovah well enough, but what about jireh? Interestingly, this word is rooted in the Hebrew verb "to see." As we come closer to the actual word jireh, the meaning takes on the idea of "seeing something through." That's powerful as you consider God being One who sees things through on our behalf. He not only knows what's needed in our lives, but He also knows how to see to those needs, and He faithfully does as our provider. God's provision is based on the fact that He sees our needs and sees through the task of meeting them, and the name Jehovah-jireh is a perfect reflection of this! Jehovah-jireh And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided." What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
