Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 161 OF 365

El-hay Pretend you're one of the Israelites, poised on the bank of the Jordan River, ready to cross over and take possession of the Promised Land. The weary wandering in the wilderness is finally about to come to an end. By all accounts, it should be a day of celebration and jubilation. However, if you're among those in the Israeli camp, a few questions are gnawing at your mind. "Isn't that land over there already settled? Didn't the report come back that there were giants living there? And how in the world are all of us supposed to cross the Red Sea to get over there? What makes us think we can even do this?" It's right then and there that Joshua speaks to the crowd, and as if anticipating all these questions, he refers to God as the "living God." Why? Because this is the answer to all their questions. The Isrealites belong to the God (El) who is living (hay), not some lifeless statue or idol that the other nations bow down to. He is alive unlike all other gods, and will be active unlike all other gods. El-hay is what sets them apart. El-hay will give them the land. El-hay will be the one to drive out the giants. El-hay will even dry up the Jordan River so they can cross over. El-hay, the living God, will make all this possible. The fact that God is alive, that He is El-hay, makes all the difference in their situation-and in ours. When we're confronted with something that seems utterly impossible, when the doubts and questions begin to gnaw away at us, we need to stop and call upon the name of El-hay, the One who is alive and active on our behalf. Our God is alive unlike all other gods, and will be active unlike all other gods. El-hay, the living God, will make all things possible. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
