We became citizens of heaven the moment we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. In choosing Jesus, we must renounce and abjure our allegiance to all else. This includes our political parties, patriotic identities, and politicians. The choice between the two is mutually exclusive.

As citizens of heaven, we are called to be ambassadors during our time here on earth, the cultural liaisons who should reflect the nature and character of our true home, whether we’re engaged in official business at the office or personal errands around town. Everything we do should represent Christ in all areas of our lives, including when we’re engaging in politics.

It's easy to get caught up in the divisive rhetoric of today's political climate. We care so deeply about being on the “right” side of politics that we often label those on the other side of the aisle an “enemy” and treat them as second-class citizens. But I want us to imagine being as intentional about putting human leaders, party platforms, and even our opinions second to representing God’s priorities, agendas, and truth. If our words and actions reflected God’s nature and love—not only to our political allies but also to our political enemies—our demeanor would be so welcoming that we would draw them to our doorstep with God’s love, like bees to flowers.

Reflection: What would happen if we all took our roles as ambassadors of heaven seriously—no longer as a representative of a party or platform, but as representatives of God?
