Saul was the first king of Israel. The Israelites were under attack from a group of people called the Philistines, and they wanted a king to lead them in battle. God told a prophet named Samuel to find a king for Israel. Samuel chose Saul, who was very tall and very handsome and led the Israelites in many successful battles. But Saul didn't always do what God told him to do, and eventually God chose another king to lead His people - a man named David.
