DAY 361 OF 365

Here are the core values that define a U.S. Marine: honor, courage, and commitment. Honor requires a Marine to be ethical and moral. Courage requires a Marine to do what is right regardless of what others may do. Commitment is a relentless dedication to excellence. Marines are to never give up, never give in, and never accept less than the best. Based on these criteria, King Saul could not be a U.S. Marine. God once told King Saul to carry out a mission. God told him to go punish the Amalekites; these people had mistreated the ancient Israelites. The Amalekites had refused to let the Israelites pass through their territory on their way to the Promised Land. Instead of fully obeying the Lord, Saul chose to spare the Amalekite king’s life, and to save the best of the booty for himself and his men. God then told the prophet Samuel, “I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has again refused to obey me.” Samuel went to Saul; Saul tried to convince the prophet that he had carried out God’s command, but Samuel knew better. He said to Saul, “Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you from being king.” When we fail to obey our Lord, we can disqualify ourselves for being God’s servants.
