DAY 28 OF 365

Carter G. Woodson started the celebration of Black History in 1926. He wanted all of America to recall what African Americans had done to help make our country great. He wanted youths to know about the talents God had given African Americans. He believed this knowledge would inspire hopeless young people to achieve. Years ago, God wanted to inspire His dejected people. They were in exile, living in faraway Babylon, thinking God had forgotten them. To give them hope, God gave them messages through the prophet Isaiah. God reminded them of what He had done in the past—for them as well as for the world. Here are some of Isaiah's words: "The LORD, your Redeemer and Creator, says this: 'I am the LORD who made all things. I alone stretched out the heavens. By myself I made the earth and everything in it. When I speak to the rivers and say 'Be dry' [so you can get across], they will dry. When I say of Cyrus, 'He is my shepherd,' he will certainly do as I say.'" God reminds His people that He created and sustains everything by His word. This reminder would encourage ancient Israel to know God could and would bring them home again. The same truth can encourage us. God would say to us, "If I created trillions of stars and can call each by its pet name, I have no trouble knowing your name. I will help you if you rely on and submit to Me."
