DAY 22 OF 365

A truck driver ignored the speed sign on an S curve. His load shifted, the truck swerved; the truck with him in it went over the wall. He died. People constantly ignore warnings. They drive intoxicated, ignore weather warnings of disasters, or delay to get their health checked. When we ignore warning signs, we pay a price. This happened to ancient Israel. God warned them through many prophets to turn from their sins to avoid disaster. After repeated warnings, the enemy invaded their country, destroyed their land, and took most of the people captive. The author of Psalm 74 laments the nation's destruction. He grieves because he knows their devastation is because they ignored God's warnings. Here is his lament to God: "Walk through the awful ruins of the city; see how the enemy has destroyed your sanctuary. They chopped down the entrance like woodcutters in a forest. We see no miraculous signs as evidence that you will save us. All the prophets are gone; no one can tell us when it will end. How long, O God, will you allow our enemies to mock you?" Why do we ignore warnings? We may not trust the messenger. We may focus only on the present and ignore long-term consequences. Or we may hope the results will not be as bad as predicted. Such reasoning is faulty. Wise people think and plan—especially when God has spoken.
