Daily Direction Reading Plan

DAY 182 OF 365

Years ago, someone started a false rumor that had devastating results. The rumor was that a company would give $500 to all families affected by a class-action lawsuit. The rumor spread like wildfire. Before it ended, the company had spent millions of dollars fighting the lie. Words are powerful. It is why the Bible is so emphatic in urging us to speak the truth—at the proper time—and to build, not to destroy. Proverbs 10:18 reads, “Slandering others makes you a fool. Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. The words of the godly are like sterling silver [they have great value]. The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.” The Apostle Paul said he was very careful in his use of words. He writes in 1 Corinthians 2, “When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan… My message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.” Paul also wrote in Ephesians 4:21, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander.” Stated another way, kind, tender, and wise words are welcome at any time.
