The Gospel of MarkSample

In the first 8 chapters of the gospel of Mark, he is trying to answer the question: Who is Jesus?
In the opening of chapter 7, a group of religious leaders come from Jerusalem to evaluate the
ministry of Jesus. The idea that these men come to evaluate the ministry of Jesus was okay.
The problem we see though, is that these men had already made up their mind about Jesus and
then would look for something to confirm their opinion. These men instead of measuring Jesus
according to God’s word, held a much higher regard for their religious traditions (ex: ceremonial
hand washing and spiritual cleansing).
This is such a great reminder, that in our own journey of coming to know God, we have to hold
truth up against God’s word, more than any religious experience or previous understanding,
more than any one teacher or preacher, more than any religious traditions. God invites us to
come to Him, open-handed and to know Him through intimate relationship, allowing the Holy
Word to be our ultimate source of truth.
