Prophecy and Promise: Devotions from Time of Grace

DAY 16 OF 37

God Laid on Jesus the Iniquity of Us All Everything that you have ever learned about proper justice is that those in authority should punish the guilty and release the innocent. We hate hearing stories about people wrongly imprisoned, and we hate it even more when an obviously guilty criminal gets to walk. And yet that's exactly what God did to rescue you. Nobody would ever have guessed this marvelous secret if God hadn't revealed it, because it seems to make no sense. But it's the truth, and it's your only chance. In God's court, the innocent God/man Jesus Christ was convicted and executed. The obviously guilty parties, a.k.a. you and I, are pardoned unconditionally. No, really. Seriously. Nobody ever expressed this unexpected and shocking good news better than the prophet Isaiah: "The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. . . . The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:5,6). Have you found the utter peace of mind and soul that comes from letting go of your fear of God’s punishment?
