Real Hope: Hope in the Life of Peter

DAY 5 OF 7

## ‘Feed My Sheep' Throughout the Gospels, Peter’s interactions with Jesus and the disciples reveal a leader marked by impulsiveness, ambition, self-assuredness, and a readiness to commit without always grasping the full depth of Jesus’ Words and Actions. He often stands out as an outspoken disciple, unafraid to question Jesus (John 13:6). While Peter promptly accepts Jesus’ challenges (John 13:9), he falters in his commitment during Jesus’ Suffering (John 18:15,25). Yet, in John 21, we witness Peter’s profound transformation. He leaps from his boat upon recognizing Jesus by the Sea of Tiberias (v7). Over a shared meal, Jesus confronts Peter, the same disciple who had denied Him during His Most Critical Hour (John 18:15–19). Reflecting Peter’s earlier denial, Jesus poses a question three times: ‘Do you love me?’ (v15), and Peter responds. With each response, Jesus entrusts Peter with a solemn task – to care for His followers and to follow Him, stating, ‘Feed my lambs’ (v15), ‘Take care of my sheep’ (v16), ‘Feed my sheep’ (v17), and finally, ‘Follow me!’ (v19). For Peter, following Jesus meant more than a deep relationship; it signified a commitment to the work of shepherding God’s people and the Works of Jesus. In Acts, Peter embraces Christ’s Mission, placing a strong emphasis on teaching, prayer, healing, and the conversion of new followers. These changes in Peter’s life offer a message of hope for us all, showing that transformation and redemption are possible even after doubt and denial. Peter’s journey from impulsive disciple to a dedicated shepherd of God’s people serves as a powerful reminder that, with faith and a willingness to follow, we too can overcome our shortcomings and make a meaningful difference in the world. #### Written by HEIDI WYSMAN
