In verse 11, James reminds us how to live in patience through suffering by remembering Job. As a quick reminder, Job is a whole book in the Old Testament. The story begins with the Devil betting against God that if Job didn't have the easy and luxurious life he has now, he would quickly turn away from God.
But God knows Job’s heart, and so lets the enemy take everything. His possessions, wealth, family and reputation are all destroyed, even his friends try to convince him to give up! Yet still Job would not deny the Lord. In today’s reading, we have included an excerpt near the end of the story where Job confesses again his unwavering obedience. In the end, God blesses Job by giving him back twice as much as before!
