After greeting his readers, James immediately starts talking about perseverance during trials. As the Jewish followers of Jesus were taking the message of all that had happened to the Gentile world, they came up against many attitudes and ideologies that were opposed to what they were sharing. James encourages his readers that this testing of faith produces perseverance.
In our culture today, there are also many ways of thinking that are in opposition to the way of Jesus. These might test or stretch our faith, but this is a good thing. As we continue to persevere despite challenges, we grow in maturity.
