There are many words of wisdom about the tongue both secular and spiritual. James often calls back upon the poems and shrewd words of Solomon in the book of Proverbs. For example, Proverbs 18:21 says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” How we use our tongue, for James, is of utmost importance because it reveals the state of our hearts.
