The first phone number I learned growing up was likely 911. I was told that in case of an emergency call this number and someone would send help. In all this time, some 40 years later, I’ve never used it. In a way it’s like an insurance policy for emergencies. We don’t own insurance with the hopes that we will need to use it. We own insurance in the instance that something bad happens (generally speaking). In all those years of paying on an insurance policy, or knowing the 911 telephone number, I’m thankful that I haven’t had to use much of either.
In reading Psalms 121 today we find David describing God as our help and our protector. It made me think of how so often we use God as our insurance policy or our 911 call. Instead I believe we need to change our perspective. God is there to help and protect for sure, however David isn’t crying out to God for help in this particular Psalm. Instead he is declaring God as our help and protector. Psalms 121: 1 says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
While God is surely a place of refuge for us as Christians and a name to call upon when we are in need or struggling, he is also our present help. Through Jesus we have the Holy Spirit that acts as our constant companion. Someone who, as we walk through this life, is with us moment by moment. He’s not a number we need to dial when we are in trouble or an insurance policy we only use when something catastrophic happens, but instead is a source to use moment by moment. God’s help is never a phone call away but lives by our side each moment of every day!
