Through the Bible: 2 TimothySample

The Full Distance
But you must keep control of yourself in all circumstances; endure suffering, do the work of a preacher of the Good News, and perform your whole duty as a servant of God. As for me, the hour has come for me to be sacrificed; the time is here for me to leave this life. I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:5-7 (GNT)
I gave a eulogy at my dad’s funeral in 2016. It was sad to say goodbye but good to share about his life to those who gathered that afternoon. He had a bumpy life, but it ended well in God’s loving embrace. The entire affair made me more aware of the nearness of death and fragility of life. It changed my life priorities. Cherish people more. Remember God. Worry less about wealth and worldly achievements (which are not mentioned much in funerals).
When writing to Timothy, Paul was aware of his impending death. He reminded Timothy of difficulties in the last days. But instead of fear, Paul was confident because he knew he had focused on what really mattered: keeping the faith, doing his best, and going the full distance. He urged Timothy to do likewise.
The days are slow, but the months and years fly by. May God help us in our daily decisions so that in the grander scheme of things, we may keep the faith, do our best, and go the full distance.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life. With You by our side, help us to use it well! In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

About this Plan

With the Great Fire of Rome and consequential uproar in the city, Christians became a convenient scapegoat and were brutally persecuted at the hands of Emperor Nero. The Apostle Paul was once again imprisoned, and facing his impending death, Paul wrote his last words to strengthen his spiritual son Timothy charging him to fulfill his calling in ministry. Paul’s life is an example to followers of Jesus in any generation.
