Open Hearts & Open Homes

DAY 16 OF 21

# Day 16 Written by Ps Craig Maher ## Open to the Unexpected Strangers ### Read Genesis 18:1-8 ### Reflect There is such a beautiful, simple generosity we see in Abraham's attitude and actions when the three unexpected visitors arrive. These are strangers, and yet, we see it was important for Abraham that his guests immediately felt welcome and comfortable. Both he and Sarah do what they can themselves to extend hospitality. They don't have their servants extend welcome and comfort… they do it. There is simplicity too in what they provide. The setting is under the shade of trees; they literally provide what they have – in this case, meat, yogurt and some flour cakes/bread. It's clear to see that this was not a chore, but a delight and honour for them to host these guests in their home. The writer to the Hebrews makes mention of this account from Genesis 18 in Hebrews 13:2 (AMP) "Do not neglect to extend hospitality to strangers [especially among the family of believers—being friendly, cordial, and gracious, sharing the comforts of your home and doing your part generously], for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it." There are times when our willingness and attitude of extending hospitality to the unexpected, and the stranger opens our lives to the very word, presence and promises of God. So often our lives grow larger by the gift of new people in our lives. Maybe that neighbour you don't really know might be God's blessing… both you to them and they to you! ### Respond Is there any hesitation in your heart or mind offering hospitality to those unexpected? If there is, what are the issues that arise for you? What needs to change in you to be open more to extend hospitality to strangers or those less known in your sphere of influence?
