Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 36 OF 365

DENIAL Bennett Cerf told of a London plutocrat who, driving his new Rolls Royce through the Alps, heard a disquieting snap. The front spring had broken. He called the Rolls plant, and they flew a new spring to him as well as mechanics to install it. Six months passed, and the Londoner received no bill. He went to the plant and asked about it. After a brief delay, the manager appeared, gazed at him reproachfully, and announced, "There must be some mistake, sir. There is no such thing as a broken spring on a Rolls Royce." Many people treat doubt as the plant manager did the broken spring. They deny its existence and try to talk themselves into some pseudo faith. This seldom works. A better way of handling doubt is that of the father who brought his child to Jesus to be healed. When Christ asked, "Do you believe?" the man admitted, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" His child was healed. Jesus honored the man's request because he lived in the arena of his faith rather than the house of his doubt. He had come to Jesus even though he did have doubts. God understood and healed. Honesty is always the best policy. If we open our hearts frankly to the Lord, He always hears and heals.
