Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 347 OF 365

THE HOUR OF CRISIS Several years ago, a great statesman stood before people frightened by war and said, "This is England's finest hour." This statement spurred the war-weary people to new vigor and was a major turning point in the Second World War. Sir Winston Churchill's optimism in the midst of the rubble of war expresses the eternal truth that often a crisis brings out the best in us. Character is best tested during severe trial; and, for those who know God, it can be their finest hour. Joseph of Arimathea found this to be true. Before the death of Christ, he had been a secret follower. However, when the time of crisis came, he bravely stood before his fellow countrymen in defense of Jesus and later asked that the Lord's body be laid in his tomb. This was a bold act that could have cost him his position and life. However, he no longer wanted the applause of men but sought only the approval of God. No doubt, he regretted that he had not stood up for the Lord before this moment. Do you fear the time of crisis? Are you afraid you will be unable to stand? Don't fear, for the Bible is filled with men who found their strongest moments were in times of great crisis. Jesus warned us that these times would come. He said: But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say (Matthew 10:19).
